About

Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden, popularly known as Lucknow Zoo or Banarasi Bagh, is one of the oldest and most famous zoological parks in India. Located in the heart of Lucknow, this beautiful zoo is a favorite destination for families, children, tourists, and wildlife lovers. Along with a wide variety of animals and birds, the zoo is also known for its historical importance, toy train, butterfly park, and lush green surroundings.

The zoo was established on 29 November 1921 to commemorate the visit of the Prince of Wales to Lucknow. The idea of building the zoological park was proposed by the then Governor, Sir Harcourt Butler. Before becoming a zoo, this area was a mango orchard developed by Nawab Nasiruddin Haider of Awadh during the 18th century. At that time, the place was popularly known as Banarasi Bagh, and even today many locals still refer to it by this historic name.

πŸ›οΈ Historical Importance of Lucknow Zoo

The zoological park has a deep connection with the cultural and royal history of Lucknow. During the Nawabi era, the area was famous for evening gatherings and royal leisure activities. A magnificent Baradari was constructed in the center of the garden where Nawabs spent their evenings. Even today, this Baradari stands proudly inside the zoo premises.

The Baradari has also been featured in several Bollywood films. The famous song β€œIn Aankhon Ki Masti” from the movie Umrao Jaan was filmed here. Recently, scenes from other movies and music videos have also been shot at this historic structure.

During British rule, Banarasi Bagh continued to be a popular recreational place for elite families and officers. Later, the zoological garden officially started operations in 1921. Between 1921 and 1926, nearly 26 buildings were constructed within the complex.

The zoo’s grand entrance gate was built in 1936 and was earlier known as the Sir Ludovic Porter Gate.

πŸš‚ Famous Toy Train at Lucknow Zoo

One of the biggest attractions for children at Lucknow Zoo is the famous Bal Rail (Toy Train). It was first introduced on 14 November 1969 by the then Chief Minister Chandrabhanu Gupta. The railway station inside the zoo was named Chandrapuri Station.

Later, a modern toy train and a new railway track were inaugurated in 2014. Currently, the train route covers around 1.4 km and offers visitors a fun ride through the zoo premises.
